Car GPS & Lowrance GPS Usage?

7 posts in this topic

Guys and Gals,

I searched the threads and saw a few posts on this but none directly answer the following questions:

1 - How many of you use a "mounted" GPS such as Nuvi, TomTom, etc to navigate your vehicle to the caches before swapping to a hand held.  If you do what kind is it and is loading the cache data as straightforward as it is with your handheld (PocketQuery)?  I personally don't care if it has any of the cache data, as long as it can get me road directions to the location (lat/lon) of the cache.  Right now I use my iPad but I HATE how the Geocaching App will only pull up a limited number of caches.

2 - Has anybody ever used a Lowrance unit for Geocaching and particularly any of the HDS models.  The reason I ask is I have a Ford Raptor I offroad and / or cache in and this is the optimum unit for offroading with a Heads Up style display.  I just can't find any documentation that you can upload cache files to them.

1. Yes, Garmin NUVI 2797. I convert the GPX file I create in GSAK to a POI (.gpi) with POILoader (Garmin app) so the geocaches show up on the map better as it lets me use various size .bmp files for the icons and allows basically unlimited geocaches (using a gpx file will limit you to about 2,000 caches). I have 11K caches loaded on my nuvi at all times.

2. No

I use my android phone with c:geo.

1.) GSAK can export Garmin POI file or you use can use a Nuvi macro.

http://gsak.net/help/hs45700.htm

http://gsak.net/board/MacroIndex.php ( search for nuvi )

2.) GSAK can also export Lowrance USR format. ExpertGPS also supports Lowrance.

http://gsak.net/help/hs43000.htm

http://www.geobuddy.com/gps-receivers/lowrance-geocaching-software.asp

Page 169 of the HDS Gen3 manual mentions GPX format as well as the ability to export/import waypoints

http://www.lowrance.com/Root/Lowrance-Documents/HDSGen3/HDS-GEN3_OM_EN_988-10740-002_w.pdf

So I imagine it's entirely possible to accomplish what you're asking.

Four Paw,

Best explanation yet. I found the same info on the Lowrance after I posted. In the end the main thing I wanted was the mount that worked with the Lowrance in my truck coupled with a large screen (7" plus) GPS. The other benefits of the Lowrance over the Nuvi were not worth the additional cost. I ended up ordering the mount and I'm going to have a machine shop make a new face plate to hold a 7" Nuvi instead of the Lowrance. The Nuvi is a 2757LM.

Four Paw,

That is where I started out looking and I have used their laptop mounts in my work trucks before.  Unfortunately for the Nuvi there is no "permanent" RAM mounts.  When I say "permanent" everything they have is either a suction cup, or magnetic, etc.  I know their mounts are pretty good but eventually on oilfield lead roads, hunting, etc they all come loose.  I want something where its permanently mounted so 1 - It doesn't come loose, 2 - Its hard to steal (probably lose a window instead :-)), 3 - It doesn't take up a cup holder, vent, or passenger floor space.  What I decided Im going to do is take this mount for the Lowrance and tweak the Face Plate to hold the Nuvi.
