The CLAPS Cachin' on the Bayou

Post-Mega Paddle Event

Sunday, October 12th, 2014

Launching from Bay Area Park promptly at 9:00 a.m.

WHEN THE EVENT PUBLISHES -- it will be here:  http://coord.info/GC53QWE

I will need some help on this -- I need some experienced CLAPSers to lead groups of people here for the Mega Event who may have no experience.  Whow knows how many will paddle, but if it's a large group we may want to split up and head off in different directions.

GCF is doing a coin for this event.  It's in their shop and you can get it through registration.

If someone wanted to host a CITO in a different corner of the park that day I wouldn't complain.

If someone can get me a 'yak (single/double) I'll be more than happy to lead a Kayak Texas Style 101-class.

I'm also cool with hopping in the front/back of a newbie too.

I'd volunteer, but don't think it would work out.  What do you think?

So -- for those that hold events, I've been told by PR that events must be a 1* difficulty.  Interesting, as the knowledge books don't reflect anything.  Some other 'issues' with the current event that have never been problems before which could impact all future events, I'll post what I learn after the outcome of the back and forth.  Always fun with PR.

what?  silly.... all those paddle events before were never issues.

straight from the "geocaching event" page on GC.com:

"

I am hosting an outdoor event. What if it rains?

Decide this ahead of time and post this clearly on the event page. Keep in mind that the terrain and difficulty ratings may increase with inclement weather and that will determine much of your attendance and activities."

so if they say the terrain might increase for rain, then why can't you have a paddle event with a terrain higher than 1?

Not terrain.  Difficulty.  He had no issues with 5* terrain, but wanted to make me put on there that "boating is optional".  Ok.  It is.  Bayou is filled with gators but it IS optional.

The event I had said "you can log the event if you join us on the water."  So that's issue #1.  I pointed out that I, as CO, get to pick GZ.  Which is in the middle of the freakin' bayou.  So that's akin to driving by an event at a restaurant and logging it if you don't go into the restaurant.  Logbooks cannot be mandatory at events.

No response yet.  And I did point out and asked if he had issues with 1*d but not 5*t -- what gives.

I guess PR has decided to make everyone's lives difficult (again).... I think I remember BB's zombie event being a 5/5 not too long ago, IJS

Yeah - but I'm tired of PR's inconsistencies.  And Groundspeak's.  Tell me WTF so I know how to play the game and then yes -- do what RRM10 says (and change wording, etc.).

But I need to know GS rules AND PR's rules.  They are not one and the same.  How many paddle events have there been and never an issue?  And I'm not the only CLAPS event CO, either.

the groundspeak official thing I pasted in said difficulty AND terrain and could increase with rain, etc.  SO.... that means it doesn't have to be a 1 according to groundspeak.  I searched and didn't find it.  it's just PR.

It IS just PR.  This exchange may get me banned.  lol.  I'm plain calling him on it.  No.  The exchange will not.  But there may be a page rewrite if I want to have it.  That will get me banned.

It will start out "This would normally be a 3/5 event, and always has been, but PR is making me do it on land, for everyone, "Because geocaching events are meant to be social activities, and as inclusive as possible.".  So to get this published it's now a 1/1 on land, even though the real event does not start till you hit the water and experience 3/5 D/T.

Maybe I'll rewrite it as a "CLAPS Non-Paddle event because PR is a @!$#% and boating is optional event"

Maybe you should list the event as being on one of the islands in Horsepen Bay.  On land but you would need a boat to reach it.

I was thinking the same thing at first. But putting the coordinates on an island still only affects the terrain rating.

I was also wondering why Cacherstacker thought the difficulty needed to be higher than 1. Then i realized that the difficulty would actually change for cachers who showed up late and then had to figure out where the event had paddled off to.

Might be a good time to send an email to gc.com.

Not sure if I should start a new thread...

You think PR will have an issue if someone such as myself hosts a CITO on the Saturday of GCfest for those of us trying to grab as many icons in a day?
