Hi Shane,

Just a quick note before I get back to work.

You will find loads of help on these forums, but I also wanted to let you know that going to GEOCACHING EVENTS is one of the best ways of learning as well.

The best event for your situation are those which include courses offered on basics.  But never underestimate the ability to pick things up just by listening to some of the stories told at a regular meeting.

In the beginning, particularly when you start, stick to 1/1 Difficulty/Terrain finds.  Don't be surprised if some of these are challenging occasionally.

I am sure you will get other info and look forward hearing of your adventures in the future.

definitely attend an event meeting or two in the beginning. i wish i had, but i was lucky to have my brother show me a few things before i got started too far on my own.  a good upcoming workshop/event is being hosted by baytown bert in early november.

venture out a little from your home base once you've made a find or two.  if you want to do challenges/streaks later, like this past august we had 31 days of geocaching, you'll want to save close to home ones for those days you don't have time to leave a mile or two radius.  another thing i learned a little late... when you look at your list near home, you'll see ones highlighted in green that are great for beginners.  try those before you try something too difficult and decide the game is hard to play.

and most of all, ask questions here!  we're pretty helpful around here.

Hi there! I'm pretty close to the down-town area (just off Richmond & Dunlavy) and if you're interested we can probably set something up to go out & do some (maybe even mine ;)) caches.

I've also got an event coming up @cafe Brasil on the corner of Westheimer & Dunlavy: October 30th starting 5.30pm-ish.....

Have fun & stay safe!

By all means come to Baytown on November 2nd for the free workshop!  HoustonControl, Juleed, and I will teach you more about geocaching in one hour than you can learn in months on your own.  Welcome!

Welcome Shane!  You came to the right place!

Are you caching with a GPS receiver, or are you using a smartphone app?

GC4P2MC ▼ BB's Geocaching 101 Workshop & Event!

You said it @BB, I'm really sad I'm working that weekend & can't attend that...especially because I discovered there's a certain "geocache type" I can't seem to master, (I've run across 2 exact same GZ's & know it's probably right in front of my face!). Do you have a Powerpoint print out or other "materials" I can download? I want to be a good student & get my paperwork before my absence  ^_^

Welcome Shane!

My biggest deterrent starting out was just "weeding out" the caches that hadn't been discovered in a really long time. You can do so too, (& have more fun because nobody likes disappointment!), by just clicking "Recent Logs" on your phone or online & checking the date. Don't read along too much if you don't want a giveaway though...some logs are more descriptive than others  :)

Search for Geocaching in your app store.  Geocaching.com has paid apps for Android and iPhone.  They're a bit pricey, but I think there's a free version that lets you find up to three caches at a time.

Try this link to learn more.

C:Geo  is a popular Android free Ap.   You can also peruse my page for an intro and some advice and some videos.
I downloaded that one, but which one do I use this log in with?

Eh?  You use it to log into geocaching.com and use your info there.  If you haven't created a profile on gc.com, then do it first.  crashbrokenhand.

Good luck not that one! If it hasn't been found in two years it's probably for a reason ;)
