Have you ever wanted to go paddling but don't know where to start? Been afraid to tackle something like this on your own? Not sure of your abilities so you passed on a prior paddle event? If so, then listen up. This event is for you!

This is NOT a typical paddle event. While everyone is welcome to come (and help, too!) this event is designed for beginners who have never been on the water before or who have very limited experience on the water. At this event you will have an opportunity to:

  • Come check out different types of kayaks.
  • See different types of PFDs and try them on.
  • Take a kayak or two for a short paddle to see what it's like.
  • Tump over during your test drive for the amusement of your caching friends.
  • Take photos of trackables on the water and trade and discover other trackables.
  • Learn about water access only caches in the area.
  • Learn about the local flora and fauna, the kinds with and without teeth.
  • Learn how to be gator aware.
  • Hear actual fish stories from the bayou.
  • Learn the things you need to bring for a successful paddle caching adventure.
  • And, finally, maybe go paddling on a short excursion with a small group.

Several cacher kayak owners have graciously volunteered the use of their kayaks for this event. While there may not be enough kayaks for everyone to go on the short adventure paddle, everyone will have a chance to take one out for a test paddle to see what it's like and learn that you can do this!

7/20/13:  Event begins at 9:00 a.m., although many of us will be there earlier!

Please log a will-attend asap.

I'm in! I was tempted to write something after OHLHockeyGuy's note, like... "I would be there, but I'm doing stunt double work for Brad Pitt in the Falkland Islands.", but I didn't, because I have a sterling reputation to uphold. ;)

Is anyone who fits the newbie paddler category planning on attending the event?  I know it's not the day before, but knowing in advance will help with planning.

I have never been in a kayak before, and I will be going.  I hope to be able to go in a tandem one so that the other person will do all of the paddling that I will feel safer.

I'm really looking forward to the event

I will be there and am essentially a newbie.  I have been a kayak a few times but I wouldn't count it.  It will also depend on how things go as I will have Brandon with me and I don't expect him to want to get in a kayak so I am hoping to find someone for him to hang out with while I go out ... Otherwise we both will be there for the fun.

Just let me know.  We would be happy to come get you all.

Just in case this has slipped by...  Your FEET will get wet getting in and out of the kayak.  There is no way around it, so wear water shoes or sports sandals.  I wear shorts and sunscreen also.

I have a very stable tandem Ocean Kayak.  You will not tip over.  I have a personal flotation device for you too.  If you decide to carry any electronics in the kayak, seal them in a heavy duty one gallon freezer bag, or I can put it in my dry bag.

The personal flotation device doesn't wear a wig and have bad teeth does it? :)
