Frankfurt Airport layover - want to cache! (Rome too)

Hi there!  I spent a few hours last night trying to figure this out on my own and decided maybe one of you could help me out.  I am flying with my 6 yr old whiner next month to Rome.  We have a long layover at FRA between 9 -3:45.  I would like to take her to lunch and grab some caches during that time.  I have some knowledge of the German people so I am not surprised they did not seem to have a lot of PNG caches near the airport - mostly complicated puzzle multi caches with a suggested time of 3 hours to do at minimum.  My daughter will be tired and super whiney so I can't drag her on a treasure hunt over the tarmac.  So - does anyone have a suggestion for lunch & a cache that we can get to by train from the Frankfurt airport?  I did see there was a virtual there and I will grab that too but I want to do one real cache on German soil.  I can speak/read German so I shouldn't have too much of a problem getting around I am just worried about time and difficulty.

Also - our next stop is Rome and if anyone has a favorite cache there I would love to put it on my itinerary.  We are staying near the Vatican and one called Illuminati is first on my list!

Hello there,

this is my first post here (just wanted to open my own topic), but I can indeed say a little bit about Frankfurt. First of all, let me say I don't know if you're allowed to leave the airport during a layover as I don't have a US passport. But there is a really old virtual in one of the terminals. You should be able to get there without problems: http://coord.info/GCA33A.

All regulars seem to be at least 800m away from the airport entrance. That might be quite a distance for a jetlagged child. And indeed, most mysteries will require quite some time to do and special equipment. And then the final might still be on the other side of the airport. I would ignore these and if you want to leave the airport really concentrate on the normal caches. This one: http://coord.info/GC2W355 seems to be a quite straight-forward little multi, but I cannot see if you need to be able to understand German for it or not.

Rome: That's on our schedule for next month as well :) We haven't looked at caches yet, but from what I read it's mostly micros or smaller, and many of them might be missing even though no DNF have been logged. If you're into challenges, and if there's one like that in your neighborhood: the Vatican is a great opportunity to find all caches in one country.

Looks like you have a great trip ahead of you!

Very cool concept, getting all the caches in one country. The Vatican looks like it has 2 trad and 3 puzzles. Belize has about 25, and a lot more off-shore. Monaco has about 30, and Nauru, south of the Marshall Islands in the Pacific only has one and it needs some maintenance...you make the call

You can knock out all of Somalia with one cache too, I believe.  As a matter of fact, I've found every cache in North Korea as of now as well!

Sorry to hijack your post.  I believe you will go through customs when you land in Frankfurt anyway, so leaving the airport shouldn't be much of a problem.  You will be very jet-lagged and probably just wanting to take a nap though -- certainly by the time your next flight leaves.  Security seems to go a little smoother over there since they don't make you take your shoes off, etc.  I say go for it!

We just flew in from Frankfurt you can take The NH Frankfurt airport shuttle bus they really don't ask questions it runs every 20 minutes then a .2 tenths of a mile walk on trail across the street from hotel. It is a neat TB hotel GC3AWGF. Then get back on shuttle... It pick up and drops off at Terminal 1 Hall A

This is such a cool community!  I have been looking at some Rich & Lola caches here in Houston and you were just at (yesterday I see) the cache I want to get to in Germany.  It is a small, weird world.  I should be able to get a few caches by the airport which will be a fun way to get some sunshine to beat jet leg.

i love the idea of getting all the caches in one country.  I have started working on the puzzle caches in Vatican City State.  I am very new to puzzle caches and they are hard.  Should I start a new thread to ask for help with puzzle caches?  like this one:  http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?guid=b04244a5-a334-44e3-a8c2-bdc2a3f28607  - I googled the title and it is Peter is the rock upon I build my church.  But who are the dudes?  (popes would make sense but which ones? the ones buried at the vatican?  dunno) then once I figure out who they are how do I gleam coords from that?

This one makes sense - http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?guid=6be6749e-dcaf-4c68-bf56-4a1728414205

find those domes, match them up with names and put the letters into the code.  Pretty straightforward. The other one makes me feel like a real idiot because I can't even figure out where to start!

Caching adds such an awesome element to travel - I am so excited!  We cached ourselves around Sanibel Island when on Spring Break with the kids and saw so many parts of the island we woudln't have stumbled on without GC.  Love it!!

120 caches today - and planning my first hides!

Perhaps it will be the "edition"--4 and 1 for the two mentioned by Houston Control.
