SHAC JAM - Boy Scout Geocaching

Recommended Posts

Hey Folks,

I am part of the group putting together the geocaching program for Sam Houston Area Councils big October event called SHAC JAM. BSA has started two programs to get scouts into caching - the first is Cache to Eagle:

http://www.geoscouting.com/cache2eagle.html

The second is the new GPS\GIS merit badge - it will be official by summer camp.

We are looking for some cachers that would be interested in helping with the caching booth on October 8th at the Texas Motor Speedway by College Station. We will be camping for the weekend but the event is on Saturday.

Let me know if you are interested - we will have a couple meetings but you only need to attend if you want - we will be sending out emails.

Thanks,

sunshot99 - "Get up, Get out, Find it!"  O0

I'd be interested.  We've been asked to help out a local troop, but need to re-do the training and child protection stuff.  Can you IM me to help find somewhere we can get training?

You can go here to do the training online.  https://myscouting.scouting.org/_layouts/MyScouting/login.aspx?ReturnUrl=%2f_layouts%2fAuthenticate.aspx%3fSource%3d%252f&Source=%2f

You can take lots of general training there (including the youth protection) and other specific training as well.

Be sure to print out a copy of your card.

Just did the Youth Protection.  It took about 20 minutes.

Now I have to fill out the volunteer forms for the pack I'll work with.

I'm interested. It''s been a long time since I've been in scouts, but I beet much hasn't changed. :)

Can't really say about the date now though, it's too far away.

Keep me on your list.

Thanks for the offer - as we get a little closer I will be in touch. Thanks Mr. Z for getting the training - it really helps to have a list of trained adults to call on. Many of our parents won't take the time so we can't use their help at events.

Thanks Sunshot99!

Folks, Sunshot99, Glimmermore and I (Cachendreams) are flushing out all the details on the geocaching (or should I say geoscouting) activities at SHAC JAM.

For those interested the SHAC JAM link is:

http://www.samhoustonbsa.org/shacjam.php

For the Boy Scouts 100th Anniversary they have a "Get in the Game" website:

http://scouting.org/100years/100years/Geocaching.aspx

As for the specific program at the event we are using Glimmermore's successfull program at a District camporee to start.  This involves a quick orientation to GPS and Geocaching and then a hunt for a couple caches.

To alllow Scouters and Volunteers time to see SHAC JAM overall we plan to have 'shifts' of volunteers working the GeoScouting booth.

We are also approaching Garmin (first choice since out Scout Council has Garmin ETrex) as a sponsor (anyone got connections with Garmin?).  Also talking to some Army Surplus stores to see if they will donate ammo cans and other containers (anyone have contacts there?)

Thanks and more to come

Cachendreams
