Loose lips sink ships...

Do you think the strategic planners would tell Dispatchers what they were doing with the 787?

Seriously, until the airplane is delivered, or near completion, they won't say...but when they have a firm date they'll probably start announcing new service....

First, though, comes certification for ETOPS beyond 207 minutes.  If you don't know what ETOPS is that may be best left offline privately because there's a lot to the new ETOPS rules and THAT would DEFINITELY bore most people....so we'd have to do proving runs initially with that airplane....

Other than that, assuming we're still (boy I really really hope we are) Continental, then look at our two biggest hubs:  Newark and Houston.  Then take your map and draw, let's say, 8500 mile circles (just a guess at the range...it may be almost 9000 miles...) around both cities...then look at markets that could make money....now that's a speculation because what you and I might think makes money may not.....like Australia....although this bird will have the legs to make it Houston to Sydney.....also consider multiple frequencies to two of the exploding markets out there:  India and China....Continental makes TONS of money from our China and India markets...all public knowledge...I mean BOAT LOADS even with high gas prices....you can't get big enough or enough frequency to those countries....

So, that's my take on that airplane...... except.....

Go here:  Awesome 787 computer generated video ....it features a COOL video in all the liveries of the launch customers for the 787....

"New" ETOPS rules?  Wow, I'll have to look 'em up to compare with what's currently in place.  Speaking of ETOPS, does the -900ER have plans for ETOPS certification?

Maybe someone will start a new company, "Badger Air", with beer powered airplanes, so the threads can be combined into one!

I wonder what the airline slogan would be...

SO............

Speaking of airlines...

CONTINENTAL IS NOT MERGING!!!!  O0 O0 O0 O0 O0 O0

The thought of caching in Illinois instead of here wasn't the only thing to dread with a merger...

The thought of real estate there.....the winters.....the TAXES....

We dodged that one for now....to think we would have become OneStepFrozen.....  :D

Ummm....

I'm really not trying to be a smart alec here, but I just happened to notice a picture the other day on a-net of one of yall's -900ER's.  The picture is too large to attach here, so I'm creating a link to the picture.  Take a close look at the nose gear door..  Could it be?

On another note, I'm glad yall aren't merging...yet.  I'd hate to think what kind of negative changes would occur if that happened.

So now United is in merger talks with US Airways.  Sometimes a merger is better than ending up being the small fish in the pond.  ::)

Smart Alec.  ;)

This is called what happens when you're not on a desk regularly any more.  I would have known that but since I've been working on our new flightplanning system for the last 16 months I get a little rusty on which airplanes are ETOPS.  BUT, I can tell you more about the new ETOPS rules that we haven't implemented yet....

I did Dispatch airplanes twice last week (Tuesday and Saturday) and can say Continental is using these -900s on routes that so far don't seem out of the ordinary....yet. (At least to me...)

CAVEAT:  There might be folks here with friends/family/relatives who work for both carriers you mentioned so I have to be careful about my opinion on this.

Fact:  United lost over $500 MILLION in the first quarter alone.  How much more can they trim since they did all that trimming after bankruptcy.  It's sad but they aren't just bleeding, they're hemorrhaging very badly.

Fact:  The labor situation at USAirways is a mess since the AmWest takeover.  AND they lost a lot of money.  AND they don't have the complimentary route structure Internationally that CAL has.

So, mix United with USAirways and what do you REALLY get?  Could it work?  Possibly.  Delta/NWA has a better chance for a number of reasons.

Will this make things hard on CAL?  Sure.  We have airplanes on order.  Lots of them.  (AND we can't get ENOUGH of them right now...)

United?  ZERO.  Really, they don't.  Their fleet is getting older and they have NO plans to replace them.  If they got an order in NOW I've seen where it will be something like 4-5 years before they'll see one because of the backlog from the Asian and Middle East carriers.

Bottom line is the industry is a mess because of oil, not because of competition.

And the airlines that decide to go Chapter 11 aren't going to do much about the price of gas.  It's the constant that is bleeding the industry dry.

Don't count out foreign investment here, either for CAL and a partnership with AAL.

You brought up good a good point, though.  Still, glad to not be going to Chicago..... :)

I suppose for a merger to work, both parties need to bring something to the table.  For CAL, these other carriers don't seem to do that.  The best you would probably get is to add their routes, gates and equipment, then slash workforce to get the overhead down.  Not pretty.  We went through some of that in '98 when we "merged" with (bought) Mobil.

I was thinking about my first ever flight the other day...CRP to IAH on TI.  Yes, TI.  Yeah, I know, this kinda dates me, right?  I was 4 at the time, and can still remember trying to use the lav when it was really bumpy.

My first international flight was from IAH to LHR via MIA on National Airlines.  We flew from IAH to MIA in a B727 and then I got to be awestruck by the huge DC-10 we boarded.

My first commercial flight was from IAH to MIA in 1979 on National Airlines.  I don't remember what kind of plane.

70s_airplane_02_large.jpg

I'd flown quite a few times before that, but only in single-engine Pipers. and the like.

Those are funny, OSC!  I'd love to hear some of the other more "colorful" titles.

Here's another blast from the past.  Now, remember this was many years ago...around 1980 or so.  I actually got some "stick time" in a B-Cal 747 on the way back from LGW to IAH.  Yeah, no kidding!  It's a long story, but true.  In this day and age, people would be horrified to hear of a kid in the cockpit "flying" the aircraft.  One of the cool things about that experience was passing a Delta L-1011 heading the other direction.  We had just crossed the Mississippi River, and the Captain pointed out the Tri-star approaching us.  Given the separation requirements, it was still the closest I've ever seen another "heavy" in flight.

I'll post more later but here's the new speed record for our GPSr...note the altimeter...we were at FL390 (39,000ft) on the way over to Orlando but the 60CSx gets a little flaky with the altimeter settings....(more on that later, too...)
