  1. Texas A&M Health Study

Great to know! But I'm also wondering about biking. When I take a day off of work and my husband and I cache, we prefer to ride bikes if possible. It's less steps, but I'm still getting exercise. I wish they'd give us a sample survery so we'd know what to expect. When we took the survey to sign up, it asked all sorts of questions about activity levels and exercise. I wonder if the monthly surveys are going to be similar? Maybe we'll have to account for vigorous activity outside of caching?
  2. Texas A&M Health Study

Nice color...the pedometer should be really easy to find when it falls off in the woods or really tall grass.
  3. Questions from a semi newb....

I wasn't sure about a premium membership either, but what I like most about it is the ability to get notifications of newly published caches. I don't know anything about Geosphere, but I think c:geo is handy when I'm out and about and want to see if there are any caches nearby. I second the Oregon series by Garmin for a GPS. I had been using a 10-year-old Magellan Sport Track. It worked great and was spot on, but then the screen started to darken and it's very difficult to read. It's to the point where I can't see numbers/letters to manually enter caches (and I have to manually enter with that unit because it doesn't communicate with my computer). I bought an Oregon 450t, and now I'm spoiled. I'm thinking about buying a Garmin Etrex 20 for my kids to use, also, though I don't have any experience with this model.
  4. Anybody Use ATT U-verse?

To echo what most of the others have said, we made the switch from Comcast to AT&T U-Verse and have been very happy with it. There was a minor issue just after set up, but as others have said, they sent out a technician right away, and the issue was fixed. He also gave us his cell phone number in case we had any other problems. I'm glad we made the switch. It seems like we were always having problems with Comcast, and I now get more channels at a lower rate than when we had Comcast.
  5. Vacuum cleaners

I have a Dyson DC25, and I love it! I use it almost daily (small kids and indoor cats and dogs). It works great! I had a Kenmore canister vac for several years, and I thought it was doing a good job. When it went out, we took the plunge on the Dyson, and I had to empty it 3 times before I even finished going over the floors throughout the house the first time I used it. I had no idea my carpets had that much dirt trapped in them. We've since replaced most of the carpet with wood flooring, and the vacuum works wonderfully on all surfaces. I don't know how it happened, but a piece inside the vacuum head did break just after we'd had it a year. We called Dyson, explained the part that had broken, and they shipped us a brand new vacuum head at no charge. They said it would take up to a week, but I had it in 2 days. That's what I call customer service!
  6. GC's View Map

    Me too!
  7. Does anyone here use a Magellan eXplorist GC Geocaching GPS?

Thanks for all the input! The more I think about it, the more I think I'll just go ahead and get the GPS and use the one I already have. It really would be better since my husband and I always cache together with one GPS. There have been more times than I can count where it would have been nice to have a second unit so we weren't both trying to use the same one. I went caching with friends today, and we were still undecided where we were going last night, so I manually input over 20 caches into my GPS. That took forever! I will definitely try a serial to USB converter. I forgot to mention that I did try easygps, and had no luck getting it work.
  8. Does anyone here use a Magellan eXplorist GC Geocaching GPS?

It's one or the other or both. I really don't know. I tried hooking up the cable that came with it (it's a serial port), and my computer doesn't even recognize it. I'm not too terribly tech savvy, but I can usually figure things out, and I just can't get it to work. However, I wouldn't know if it ever worked. My husband gave it to me when we got married, and I literally never used it. I got it in 2003, and I finally started using it this past April. I would be using it exclusively for caching. Right now, I don't have topo maps on my GPSr, but that is one feature I'd really like to have, so that's something for me to think about!
  9. I'm thinking about upgrading my GPS unit, and I've sort of been looking at this one: http://www.amazon.com/Magellan-eXplorist-GC-Waterproof-Geocaching/dp/B003CYKYVQ/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top The reviews are pretty mixed, so I thought I'd ask if anyone here has this particular model and what your experiences are with it? I'm drawn to this one since it comes with the free 30-day trial of Geocaching.com (I've been debating purchasing a membership...money's tight right now...yet I have been stockpiling Amazon gift cards, so the unit wouldn't actually cost me anything). Right now I'm using an ancient Magellan SporTrak Pro that I got in 2003. It works perfectly and almost always gets me exactly where I need to be, but I can't connect it to the computer, and I'm getting tired of manually entering caches. And it doesn't show any type of relief, which would be helpful. Thoughts? I read through the forums, and it seems like a lot of you are using Garmin models. Are they better? I've only ever used my Magellan, and if you are familiar with the model, you know it's a dinosaur with limited capabilities.
  10. Survey

Taking the kids caching against their will.....priceless!! OMG, that is so true! Hehehe!!! I love it when approaching GZ I get questions like "Is this one a micro? If it is, I'm out!" or "will this have toys in it?"
  11. FTF #4: First to Fulshear

I think I'm going to miss this one. The husband is at work that night, so I'll have to take the kid to t-ball, and the event will be nearly over by the time the game is over. Is it wrong to hope for rain or anything else that might cancel the game?
  12. Good caches to check out for kids?

I've got a 5yo boy and 3yo girl. They were able to walk around and "help" look for these caches, but they weren't able to find any of them. Either they're not kid level (height-wise I mean), or they were micros. Of course, my kids were more interested in standing around the lake and chasing ducks than searching for caches. My kids LOVE Brazos Bend State Park, and they've both had luck finding caches there. There are plenty just off the trails that kids can do. Also, for a long time, we took a stroller with us for our littlest cacher. It's just a plain ol' stroller not meant for off-roading, but it works! So if you need to take a stroller on (or off) the trails, it can be done. I've gotten plenty of strange looks pushing mine everywhere but the trails. Nothing like startling a bicycle rider while emerging from the woods pushing a stroller!
  13. Grass fire burning in George Bush Park

I can see the huge column of smoke from my front porch.
  14. TXGA DAY: SETX - SW Houston-Galveston-Brazoria --- Sept 10 (Saturday)

That sounds fun! I've already found a lot of the caches in the park (the endurance series being the exception), but I would love to come out and meet everyone. I'm really pushing for the husband to hurry up and finish his homework so we can attend.
  15. How do you go about seeking permission to place a cache?

There are several puzzles and at least 1 multi along that dam that might get in your way. I have found that the best way to get a feel for where the puzzles are, is to solve them! The Dam is fair game for caches, Neighborhood commons area are fair game, but take care not to create a situation where it would cause the nearby residents to become suspicious. (like placing caches on the back side of a brick fence... I've seen some of those, and always get a dicey feeling when searching. Been stopped by cops on those). Well, that's not the exact one I'm eyeing, but it's in the vicinity give or take a couple miles. I really hope I will be able to place some in this location, but I'll have to see. I still haven't gotten a premium membership, so I can't see if there are any premium caches there....I might be in for a surprise. But even if I can't place any in this particular location, I still want to hide some at some point, so the above replies help! I want to do it right the first time so my hide(s) won't cause any problems.
