Numbers run ?
« on: March 04, 2010, 11:05:04 AM »
I'm wanting to go caching in the greater Houston area and my dad is wanting to go to but he can't do a lot of walking. Can anyone steer me in an area that we can get numbers without a whole lot of walking, I myself like the hikes and the parks but he won't last long enough to get but a few and he really likes caching. Any and all help would greatly be appreciated, Thanks,

As a complete homer, I'd suggest the Clear Lake area as a good source of easy access and enjoyable caches. There are more than 300 tradionals, virtuals or earthcaches within twenty miles of the Space Center. It's not Houston, but it's close, and there are a lot of park close/short walk caches in a mostly suburban setting. And about 20 of them are mine! Good luck, and have a good time caching with your dad.

I just checked, and I see over 640 caches within 10 miles of my house (over 32 pages of 20 caches each) in Clear Lake City.  BBQBob2 must have been counting the ones HE hasn't found. ::)

Hope you have a great day.

Some lunch suggestions/waypoints:

BBQ             29  31.223    95 4.655           Red River in League City

Burgers       29 32.500     95 1.200           T-Bone tom's in Kemah

Oysters       29 29.687     94  55.171        Gilhooley's in San Leon

I have a cache at Gilhooley's, because their Shrimphooley's are the best I've ever had,
and though the cache has never needed maintenance I stop by every few months to check on it.  ;)

I had no idea there is a cache at Gilhooley's. We love the shrimphooleys as well. Made a trip over last week to try the new Topwater grill.

Shrimphooley's rule.

Looks like Team c-hawksearcher had a good run through Friendswood, Webster and Dickinson.
Great to see three generations of cachers on the hunt.

I think we managed to nab 32, I went and relied on my I-Phone and it blipped out on me for a couple of hours so we were jumping all over the place.  :-[ I will get a game plan for the next run, I looked at the map afterwards and thought thats crazy, look how many I skipped around and passed up. We will be back in the next couple of weeks better prepared and hopefully get more numbers, none the less we had a great day with the 3 of us,  O0 Thanks BBQBOB2 for all your help,  O0

My iPhone Geocaching app went wonky (kept saying no results) on me Sunday, too, but I could find info using Safari.  A bit slower, but it worked.

Always looking for a new lunch spot, we decided to give Gilhooley's a try.  It is a little bit far, but since the sun was shining we decided to give it a go.  First, I was impressed with the "NO KIDS" rule.  But, as soon as we walked in the door we were overcome by the smell of cigarette smoke.  We asked if we could sit outside and were told not until noon by the waitress walking off with her back to us.  Well, since it was about 10 minutes til noon and they apparently weren't willing to wait on us outside we left and went a little further down the road to Topwater Grill.    Even though the food may be great (which I will never know) I would have to give this place a thumbs down.

Personally, I'm sort of obsessed with Joe Lee's in Clear Lake Shores. Mmmmmmmm, oyster basket, cole slaw with tiny bay shrimp and a hot french roll. I'm so glad we will be down there tomorrow.  O0

The smoke at Gilhooley's can get thick, and the service can be quirky.
I've eaten inside and out many times and always enjoyed it.
I've driven by Joe Lee's for 10 years and now I'm curious...

There's a good website called b4u eat that has reviews of restaurants all over the Houston area.

We tried 888 Bistro on El Dorado in CL last night for the twins birthday party and the service,
food and decor  were excellent. My new favorite for Chinese in CL.

Topwater Grill is the spot to eat down there. I've been going for years and was sickened when Ike tore it a new one. They only opened up a couple of weeks ago. Gillhooley's is a quirky place that I've learned to love. The smoke is bad at times and I had a knock down drag out there one night, but it is worth it for the oysters.

Mine did the same thing as well.  I turned my phone off and rebooted it and it worked fine from then on.  Thanks, Steven

Wow, I have made my second run to the Friendswood area and nabbed 63 from there so far and looking at the map, I haven't even hardly put a dent in them, I will be making several trips back to the area.
