Davis Hill State Park in Liberty County - Closed

Interesting and long article in the Sunday Houston Chronicle about this park that was obtained in 1985 but never opened due to lack of funds. I think it would be nice to have a wild use park. Use at your own risk park with limited if no trails.

I finished reading the article it it stated that legislators are raiding the funds from the park to the point that they only receive 1/4 of the money they are supposed to get. Another example of things wrong with the government.

I am surprised that they don;t try to get people who love the parks to volunteer to help.

CITO's don't have to be all about cleaning up.  They can be for improvements as well.:

Cache In Trash Out is an ongoing environmental initiative supported by the worldwide geocaching community. Since 2002, geocachers around the world have been dedicated to improving parks and other cache-friendly places. Through these volunteer efforts, we help preserve the natural beauty of our outdoor resources!

Geocachers around the world celebrate International Cache In Trash Out weekend annually by hosting and participating in Cache In Trash Out Events in their local area. Events might be focused on litter clean-up, removal of invasive species, revegetation efforts or building trails. Together, we make an enormous positive impact. Did we mention that we also have a bit of fun while we're at it?

They already use a lot of volunteers (in addition to the paid staff)

In which way do you mean help?  It does seem like they could organize the park-lovers in a way to take action, but what would be the most meaningful way in which they could use their volunteers?

The problem is that the money set aside for the parks is being raided for other services.  The way I see it, if people love the parks they could sign the petition that was going around online, people could protest, they could write to their representatives.  If it was a matter of not being able to keep up the parks because they could not pay rangers to staff it, it is possible they could organize a volunteer base to handle all the items rangers previously did.

Our lawmakers and state government have been liberating more and more funds from the coffers of the TPWD. Frankly, I'm getting really tired of it. TPWD is one of the very few areas of Texas Government that can more than pay for itself if others would leave them alone. I'm just not sure how to help other than to complain, but my complaining hasn't helped yet.

I would tell all of you what I think about the whole thing, but I think it is best for me to not comment on the politics. :knuppel2:
