I read they will be making an appearance at the Texas Challenge.

I found some at the Block Party.  They are temporary caches, with a logbook, that you log online with a code word through your smart phone or computer (on a website, not an app).  They are only available for a few days.  They count for your find total, and show on your statistics page, but there is no record of your online log anywhere and no cache page to go back and visit.  They don't show up in your Found Caches pocket query either.  (I had to create a record of them in GSAK to add to my FindsStatsGen profile, using the "Other" cache type, since GSAK doesn't have a labs cache option).

There may be labs caches at Geocoinfest this fall.

They don't show up in the Found Logs pq? That seems strange. I understand the GSAK thing, maybe those folks can create a work around so they show up with the correct icon and type.

There is no valid unique cache code or cache ID for them nor associated online logs.

Several people requested that Clyde add the labs cache type and icon to GSAK so folks could manufacture the cache themselves in GSAK, but he basically refused.  http://gsak.net/boar...abs caches"

Did everyone else (well, premium members anyway) get the special February-only lab cache invitation notification today?

yep, got one too. I thought it was SPAM, so did my Outlook, since I saw it in the bulk email / spam folder. Looks like it's rolling out to premium members in some random order.

Here's the text:

During the month of February, Geocaching Premium Members will help explore the frontier of the geocaching experience.

You're among the first adventurers to test a brand new feature that lets you flex your geocaching creativity like never before.
You can create a personalized, one-time geocache. It's free, and time is already running out. What are you waiting for?

Why am I all sweatty and late? Umm...

I heard about the February Lab caches, but wondered about them.  I guess they really are trying them out, and don't have all of the details in place.

I didn't get one, though I'm a premium member.  I checked my SPAM bucket just to be sure.  Not sure if they're taking time to roll it out.  That said, Log Dawgs posted the link in the Shout Box.  Here it is http://www.geocachin...eartgeocaching/  I created mine for my wife.  Now she'll have to create an account and find her Valentines day gift.  Sneaky way to get her to create an account.

$5 Says there will be at least 5 proposals made with this iheartgeocaching lab cache.

Yeah, because you'd put the thing deep in the woods.  My wife doesn't have to leave the yard

No I would put it in a swamp and make her solve a field puzzle with three combo locks while standing on her head.

So you're saying the finder can be a non-premium member?

According to a groundspeak person answering questions on a discussion board on gc.com ONLY the hider/creator of the lab cache has to be a premium member but anyone can find it.

My understanding (based on what Bryan said on a GeoGearHeads podcast) is that the finder must have an account - doesn't need to be premium, but they need to have one.
