I'm still unclear on the August Souvenir thing.  Do you have to find a cache every day in the month to earn any souvenirs (only find caches on 30 days of the month and YOU'LL GET NOTHING AND LIKE IT), ... or do you just get a souvenir for each day to elect to find a cache?

Looks like one for every day you do it, and they don't have to be consecutive.  So you could get one or 3 or some other number 31 or less depending on the number of days, and 2 on one day that's Int'l GC day or something on top of that.

They should have done one IF you did and completed the 31 day streak, IMHO.

This is from Geocaching's FB page:

The month of August has a new name: the 31 Days of Geocaching. Each day you find a geocache gets you a new souvenir. Gear up for your month-long streak by earning the Geocaching Get Outdoors Day souvenir on July 13 and checking out these 8 handy geocaching-streak tips: http://bit.ly/17Tgn4M

This does seem to "cheapen" souvenirs.  One would think that there should at a bare minimum be a separate souvenir if you did all 31 days.  I suspect that this activity might devalue streaks in some people's eyes.

I concur with the interpretation of the event, i.e., one souvenir earned corresponding to the day numbers logged in Aug 2013, including events. If streak is broken at day 15, then you'd end up with 15 blue souvenirs numbered 1 through 15.

****

Personally, I am good with the promotion of activity in August. My longest streak is 2 days, I think. I'm gonna give it a try.

****

Regarding the dilution of earned souvenirs:

I say that all Souvenirs aren't created equal. Challenges must be adjusted accordingly. Further, I think this August 2013 promotion dilutes nothing, nor does it diminish the accomplishments each of us has achieved previously. It's not the number of medals on the chest, but rather why each medal was awarded. :-)

so... I submitted three events for august.  The first, to be on August 1st was submitted exactly two weeks before the event is to be held.

I just checked the guidelines and they say:

[events] are submitted at least two weeks prior to the event so that potential attendees will have sufficient notice to make plans.

So... what do you think will happen considering PR backlog?

In any case, I will post all three on the calendar here so people have sufficient notice to make plans.

20 minutes after I posted this, my events were all published.  Coincidence?   :)

This would of been my first opportunity to take part in a FTF TravelingGeek, only to look up the cache & realize...basic newbies can't view it!

With premium membership u can set up txt or email notifications for specific areas. Texas writer's area is lower 48 states, unless he recently expanded it.

Anyway, it's among the cool perks of premium.

Sorry Amberita13... most of my hides are not premium but I've been rethinking this lately.  I've had a few caches that the containers chronically go missing.  I think in some cases, they get lost to neighborhood kids.  I'm trying the premium flag to see if its different.

If you want to go after FTF's you really need a premium membership as Kenny points out.   If you have a Garmin GPS, even a car one, groundspeak used to give you a month of premium membership for registering it.   I don't recall the link, but you could probably find it by searching HGCS.

Good luck on future FTFs!

By the way, I think August would be a GREAT month to be a premium member... even if its for just a month.

Lol, you guys are funny. I just like to stay abreast of what's going on.....and maybe slink off to foreign lands for FTF's in the middle of the night. Helps keep the neighboring counties on their toes. :NTN:

HC, I have cut the entire state of Alabama out of my notifications. Considering a couple of other ones, too.
