I've seen these around but don't know what they are for.  The picture was taken after sunset so it's poor but you'll recognize it if you know what it is.

I believe they are pipeline markers.

Me too.  I tried to insert an image from google (with no luck), but the image suggested that this type of marker was for a pipeline patrol plane.

Being in oil and gas for the better part of 28 years, I was almost ashamed that I didn't know what they were for a long, long time. I let myself off the hook, though, since I've always been in exploration and production....the other end of the biz.

 

They are also homes for future caches. :coolsmiley:

FYI They are designed that way since they are easy to spot from aircraft and now google earth

Thanks.  I somehow suspected that's what they were but this one was in a location where it didn't appear a pipeline was there.

I can positively say it is a size marker for the Texas Cyclone.
