You are amazing, Arlene. These are bright shiny ornaments on the Public Service Announcement tree.

There are only 25 more days until SETX Octoberfest.  Please take heed of the to-do list.  Do not go unprepared!

Day 25:
Bring plenty of water with you.

There are some wooded areas at Octoberfest.  Even the best navigators can easily get turned around and lost in the woods.
I remember telling this to a cacher at last Octoberfest.  A few days later, a group of boyscouts found specialis rigormortio.  If only she’d listened.  :'(

Yes, we used to be a great caching team... if only she had listened :'( She was just unaware how hot this Texas heat really could get.

I know SETX Octoberfest is only 24 days away, but there is still plenty of time to prepare.  It can get really cold at the park, especially near the mountaintops, so follow this advice and you should hopefully be OK.

Day 24:
Besides restringing your snowshoes, make sure to attach the clips to your mittens.  You wouldn’t want to lose them.
I didn’t attach them last year, and I think grabbytabby took mine.

Thank you Davarle, snowshoes are highly recommended this time of year. I'll add, for those of you who may be concerned about the thin air up there,, we will have portable oxygen tanks (bring your own breathing mask) set up in various locations. Also, this year we will station Ralph, the big red St. Bernard, complete with full keg, at the check in point. Ya just never know!  O0

I have been asking for oxygen tanks in the SETX Octoberfest suggestion box for 2 years now. Thank goodness somebody finally listened.  O0

I've been recommending putting vodka in the water coolers
at work for years but they are reluctant.

There are 23 days left until SETX Octoberfest.  There are many things that must be done prior to attending.

Day 23:
Make arrangements today to board your schquankie.
Although common pets are allowed at SETX Octoberfest, such as dogs, cats, mongooses, sheep, orangutans, and tapirs, this year schquankies will no longer be allowed.
I know it’s unfair to those of us who have our own well-behaved schquankie not to be able to bring them this year.  I think last year Dodo esta ruined it for all of us.

There are only 22 days before we go to SETX Octoberfest.

Day 22:
Last day to register for SETX Octoberfest Battle of the Bands.  Remember, Omp Pa Pa bands only.
It’s going to be difficult to beat last year’s winner, Omp pa-pappy’s posse.

I will not be available for the next two days to give you to-do tips for SETX Octoberfest.  I know this is a dire situation, and it will be a trying time for all of you.  If withdrawal symptoms begin- hyperventilation, panic, feelings of doom – I suggest continue taking your medication, and perhaps reread the tips.  Breathe deeply into a paper bag if you get too panicked.    Just keep telling yourself, “It’s only 2 days.  I’ll be fine.  I’ll be fine…”

Octoberfest 2009 Cache Container Contest

We have decided to have a cache container contest, and have borrowed most of the rules from a contest held at this year’s Texas Challenge.

Two Divisions in the Contest:

Small & Below:  From nanos to sandwich-sized Tupperware-style containers or similar, less than approximately 1 quart

Regular & Above:  From larger Tupperware-style containers to ammo cans or larger

Two Categories in each Division:

Most Creative:  Imaginative, interesting, cute -- overall creative in design and execution.

Most Challenging:  Evil, difficult, well-camoed -- overall challenging in design and execution

Awards will be presented to all winners.  Prizes will be awarded to the “First Place” winners.  Of course, there is also that intangible reward: peer recognition!

Guidelines:

All entries must be received (at the event registration table) by 11 a.m. Saturday, October 10th. No late entries will be accepted.

There is no need to pre-enter and there is no limit on the number of entries.

All entries must be new, not previously hidden caches.

Cache containers must be ready to hide, including a weather-proof log book or log sheet able to stand up to the elements without leaking or breaking.

Name your cache but do NOT put your name on your cache.

All cache containers entered into this Contest become property of the Contest.  The four “First Place” winners will be auctioned and the remaining entries will be awarded as door prizes at the Event.

Contest entrants are eligible to win in more than one division and/or category.

Contest entrants are eligible to bid on the four “First Place” containers.

Contest entrants are eligible to win containers as door prizes.

Containers will be on display in the Event Pavilion as entries are received until the prize drawings begins.

Winners will be announced at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday. You need not be present to win, but it is preferred.

The Aftermath:

"What happens to my creation after Octoberfest 2009?"

We ask that each person who receives a Cache Container Contest entry as a “Door Prize” hides the container within 30 days of receiving it and acknowledges the creator on the cache page.

The successful bidders of the Cache Container Contest “First Place” containers may do what they like with their acquisitions.  The only thing we ask is that they acknowledge the creator on the cache page if and when they deploy the container.

ProMed Rick will create and maintain a bookmark list for these caches. Details will be given to each container door prize winner.

Contact: ProMed Rick at http://www.geocachin...81-363b853516f8 or through private message on setxgang.com.

We are still looking for more volunteers to judge the contest.

I’m back to give you some tips in preparing for SETX Octoberfest, which is less than three weeks away.
I had several emails, asking me the following question:
“Everyone has a great time at Octoberfest, but what happens if I am in a bad mood that day?”
Which brings us to the plan for today.
Day 19:
Practice smiling, and saying the following in a convincing tone:
“Oh, that is so interesting.”
“Me too.”
“I agree.”
“Of course, I’d love to try a piece of your liver strudel.”
“I love what you’ve done with your extra finger.”

So please, practice being pleasant.  Last year, one of the cachers was overheard saying, “I think I’ll sit this one out, but I’ll dance the next polka for sure.”
She was labeled a non-team player, was shunned for the rest of the event, and now she is banned for life.
Poor, pmsguru.

There are only 18 days until SETX Octoberfest.  You must make sure to follow my useful guide in order to ensure a safe, pleasant time for all.

Day 18:
Finish your cache container to be entered for a prize.
Please note, that no one will be allowed within 2 miles of the festivities unless you have a container, so get yours done today.  I don’t want to give it away, but this year I am building a container to look just like a 35 mm film container.  I hope I win.
Please be safe when handling tools.  I understand that last year, a cacher dropped an electric saw on her foot, and she couldn’t attend SETX Octoberfest.  We sure missed geonotoesos.

There are only 17 more days left until SETX Octoberfest.  Here are some things to do.

Day 17:
Practice for the yodeling contest.

Last year, a cacher got the SETX Octoberfest to add yodeling to one of the many contests, along with the blindfolded archery contest and the synchronized swim dancing contest, among others .  This cacher bragged about how great a yodeler he was, going on and on.  He intimidated so many people, that only one brave woman entered the contest against him.  The woman cacher went first, and yodeled respectfully.  Then it came time for the bragging yodeling cacher to sing.  I don’t want to make any disparaging remarks myself, so I’ll tell you what others have said.  They said that he croaked raspfully, and could barely yodel.  We were all majorly disappointed.  So practice your yodeling.
You wouldn’t want to embarrass yourself they way Dudfrog did last year.
