I saw a B-17 flying over the Baytown Nature Center today.  I got a pic, but it is too small and far away to really see the plane.

I heard the sirens go off, but went to my air raid shelter instead of standing out to take a pic !

Ok...everyone but OSC...

How did Continental get it's name ?

It was Varney Speed Lines and they renamed it. Why ?

C'mon, Rick, you have to ask them which other entity emerged from Varney and why it just might be poetic in the near future........

Speaking of Air Pigs, here's one of the seven new 737-900ERs we've gotten this year....gotta say while fuel is getting outrageous the smart folks who run Continental made their own fuel hedges by purchasing new and very efficient airplanes...now, the -900ER is one of them but looking at the numbers it still baffles me how the heck this thing gets more range than a regular -900, which isn't saying much because it doesn't have the legs that I've ever seen....I haven't dispatched one yet, though, since I've been on our new flight planning project....

What is the difference between the -900 and the -900ER?  Different engines?  Higher cruise altitude?

Since this data is available on the internet in various forms, the attached picture is just a collation of the data for comparison.

Ours don't have the aux tanks but they do have winglets.  Winglets do let you fly farther and more efficiently.  But the ZFW went up 9000lbs...and normally a straight weight increase reduces range.  In this case I don't see how the winglets give that much more range.

To me, what this did was give Continental a short to medium range airplane with more payload with zero fuel increase.  That means more money per seat mile profit so from a dollars standpoint it is another outstanding revenue stream.  Just like the 757-300 and 767-400....any time you add seats without dramatically increasing your cost is a Good Thing.

And not burning more gas is even better.  O0

Now operationally, those three aircraft provide challenges above and beyond normal operations because situational challenges like headwinds, maintenance problems, NOTAMS, etc., can make life interesting for dispatchers and flight crews.

It's like constantly stretching a rubber band to make something fit.  You have to make sure you do it right so you don't break it but if you try real hard you make it work.

The caveat there is there are so many safety checks in there that you never break the rubber band...there's no room for error.  And THAT is the BEST thing.  O0

No, but it can hold more cargo.  Aside from bags, freight and mail are HUGE $$$$.  The post office can't haul all that mail with their tiny fleet.  UPS and others contract out stuff they can't haul, too:  that's how BIG that segment is.

Sean D. Tucker.

Followed his career since the late 80's when I saw him at an airshow when I still lived up north in NJ....he was sponsored by Randolph Sunglasses then...anyway...went to see him here in Houston one year at WOH at EFD and told him I was (and am) a BIG fan and that he is the best pilot I ever saw...I think what made him so excited was that I told him I saw him at the Sussex Air Show (in NJ) back in '89 (it was 1999 when I was at the WOH airshow telling him this) and he gave me an autographed T-shirt and I had a great photo taken with him...really cool guy....he said he had slowed down for a while when he broke a bone in his neck during a stunt...well, judging by the video below, he still hasn't "slowed" down at all.....

Wow, that was a "sierra hotel" vid!  Here's a re-make of the classic Blue Angels show, this time using the Hornet:

And in the interest of equal time, here's the "classic" version, when they flew the "Scooter."

Here's a blast from the past...

I remember hearing the rampers at IAH wanting to bid these flights instead of the "regular" flights.
