Email from me to Prime Reviewer:  "I posted a note asking a CO to take a look at his cache, since he had disabled it 3 months ago and hadn't posted a note since.  He got miffed and said what he had written was adequate. How long is pretty much the limit before you think they should repair or archive their cache?"

Baytown Bert

Prime Reviewer:  "When I run scans for long disabled caches, I usually filter for those that have disabled since 3 months prior to the 1st of current month. I know that's a bit convoluted, but there are technical reasons for doing it that way."

Well of COURSE everyone here wants to hear Jhawk's opinion! If the CO is actively checking the cache and has reasons (construction, clearing, etc) and doesn't want to lose that spot, then leave it alone I say... within reason. I mean, 6 months a year whatever is likely way too long no matter how much you wanna keep the location. But an active CO is a precious commodity that we don't want to loose... some fancy number system be damned.

Having said that... some people are easily offended. BB's note would not have offended me, as a CO. Or, if it had, I simply would have sent him a PM saying something like "Stuff it up your arse, I'm checking it and will take care of it when they stop clearing trees back there." I tend to prefer to handle things one on one as opposed to taking it to a public forum. But then, I'm charming and diplomatic that way.

When I get those logs of his I just delete them.  Pretend it never happened.  Then steal a cache or two of his.  :stirpot:

I think the effort, generally, is good.  There is a lot of cleanup to that needs to be done.  If I'm in that situation, I should be posting a note about what's up if I can't get the cache back to operational in a reasonable amount of time. Like we know, there ARE good reasons.  So simply update it from time to time.

Personally, on well known cachers who are active I'd reach out to them first.  On cachers you don't know, don't see on the forums, and/or don't see as active, post it on the cache page.  But either way, kicking me to post a note on the cache page as to status is fine by me.

Edit for spelling because I can't type.

This lady is one of the 3 who are running for cacher of the month:

"Hurleyanne! She is one of the most generous cachers around, always quick to offer assistance to newbie cachers online and in person, and has the experience to back it up. She has taken it upon herself to compile lists of caches in the area that need maintenance and organize maintenance for those geocaches by those willing to help, and other interesting 'bucket lists' of caches, that inspire people to get out of town and explore our beautiful province. Just to show how much she enjoys the friends she has made through geocaching, she made her own wedding into a geocaching event! It would be a great inspiration for everyone in the province of Saskatchewan for her to be voted geocacher of the month."

It appears that folks are done whizzing on trees and marking their territory now, so hopefully it's safe to come out now and say that I knocked these seven off the list yesterday.  :)

It somehow seems sad that implied gun violence against a fellow cacher/s could be brought into the resolution of anything involving the game of geocaching! This is coming from someone who appreciates firearms!

My $0.02:  Sometimes I disable a cache (so cachers won't go looking for a missing cache) and real life gets in the way and I can't get out there in a reasonable amount of time.  About 50 % of the time the cache is still there when I get a chance to go look at it, so I am glad I didn't archive it prematurely.  However, I am completely ok with a nudge from my fellow cachers to make sure I make a decision one way or the other.  If I want to keep it going, I will do so.  If I've been putting it off or forgotten about the maintenance, I am fine with opening up more room for others to place caches.

The last thing I want is PR making the call.  Whoever that is, they can be like pi, or e, or radical 2........

Larry, I could've sworn you liked slugging it out with PR. If I had a nickel for every time I had to pull you off him...  :)

I know this discussion thread is about the Longest Since Last Found list and not personal cache maintenance disciplines, but since there has been so much discussion about it, I thought I'd mention this cool geocoin that someone got for me recently. It's actually one of the nicest coins in my collection of 100+ coins. Nice layout, nice finish, and nice theme. I liked it so much that I got one for someone else because of their diligent cache maintenance habits. They make lots of other cool coins to celebrate other accomplishments of our fellow cachers. Hook a brother (or sister) up!

PHD13500_pic3.jpg

I like recognizing my fellow cachers for their contributions to the game. Everyone has their own unique walk in life, and different people bring different things to the table (like Houston Control bringing the LSLF list to us every month...great job, Larry!). I have personal preferences about my own hides, so I keep all but a few of my 273 hides close to home so I can uphold my own preferences on my own hides. (On the other hand, I really suck at puzzles, so I don't imagine I'll be getting any geocoin gifts anytime soon for my puzzle-solving prowess.) There are personal disciplines of other cachers, actions taken by other cachers, etc., some of which I like, some I don't. Since geocaching is a game, and I don't want to get my knickers in a knot about anyone else, I try to just gravitate toward the things I like and away from the things (and people) that I don't. That's the beauty of living in a free country (and this was a good day to celebrate the ultimate sacrifice that so many made so we can all do that). Along the way I just want to have a positive impact and leave things at least as good as I found them...if not better. I see it as a positive thing that so many cachers have given us so many cool hides (and yes, including puzzles :)) in our area, and I also see it as a positive thing that Bert and others are seeking to keep things in good operating order. Here's to all of you for the positive things that you've brought to the game....past, present, and future.  O0

Two weeks ago, there were 279 broken caches within a 60 mile radius of Baytown.  This morning the new number is (drum roll) 65:smitten:   I apologize to any and everyone for my apparent intrusion.
